By Idaraobong Umanah (Staff Reporter)

A conservative Catholic dominated country that used to forbid and penalized abortion by law has now, through a referendum, officially upturned the law that used to criminalized abortion and make it legal now, all thanks to the wind of liberalism that is sweeping through the world.

Republic of Ireland yesterday, Saturday, in a majority vote of 66% of those that participated in a referendum to overturn the country’s constitutional ban on abortion has succeeded in their quest, as abortion now become legal in a country known officially as a Catholic country.

In a move that suggest that the Catholic country has had enough of the law many felt was against their constitutional right of choice, the people now choose to embrace the more liberal stance against her previous conservative identity, as more than 66 percent Irish voters decided that it is time to repeal the law known as the Eighth Amendment, which did placed a banned on, and criminalized abortion in the country since its passage in 1983.The law which argued in favour of the ban had it that an unborn child has the same right to life as a pregnant woman, and wouldn’t even permit abortion at all no matter the case, not even in the cases of rape, incest or fetal abnormalities.

The more than 64 percent of eligible voters that participated in the referendum, Reuters adjudged as one of the highest turnouts for a referendum, voted to now legalize abortion and to allow women the choice to have the baby or terminate the fetus once found in a pregnant state.

In a statement that shows that the Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar is in favor of the change and the confinement of the former law to the dustbin, the Prime Minister stated that the vote to repeal the ban represents "the culmination of a quiet revolution that has been taking place in Ireland over the last couple of decades."

Before now, the only option to have an abortion in whatever case, including even on health ground was for patients to travel abroad to have abortion.
